“How do I begin to consider even thinking about the Working Knowledge Initiative? How do I begin to wrap my head around an idea like that?”
Beginning to consider a life transition to entrepreneurship is a big hurdle. Most of us never consider that we spend much of our lives doing accounting (paying bills, managing budgets…), marketing and networking, and strategizing both in everyday life and at work.
Without thinking about how we do the same things entrepreneurs do— but without calling ourselves “entrepreneurs” —- we erect a strong barrier in our thinking that gets in the way of considering a new path.
The following exercise begins a “limbering up” process, to begin thinking in a slightly different way. It is also a very private, first step in personal “insourcing“- locating resources you didn’t know you had.
It involves about 2 hours on the internet; and two hours of thought.
As always, your feedback is appreciated.
I. Preparing for Entrepreneurship: Study and Reflection
This exercise dips your toe in the water.
1) It begins by reading entrepreneurship blogs for 4 days, at least 30 minutes each day.
2) On the 5th day, write out a list about what prevents you from considering entrepreneurship.
3) On the 6th day, spend an hour with this list. Reflect on what personal roadblocks you will have to face in yourself in order to begin considering a transition to entrepreneurship. This list is to be kept privately. It is entirely for the purpose of reflection and self-understanding.
